As it was written by a Titan guy... it wasn't so bad...

I was amazed when I stumbled upon "Titan Tales" that anyone had ever written about missileers - most books dealt with the weapons system and not the guys who operated it. It was refreshing to see it written in a diary format, with the exciting times coupled with the mundane ones. While this isn't Shakespeare, it is a peek into a small fraternity of men and women who can be considered "harbingers of death." Since I've sat over 300 nuclear alerts, this book, with its lulls and excitement, mirrors crew life almost exactly. For the excitement some readers are looking for, go rent a copy of "WarGames."
Insiders view of what really happened

Having been down this road myself, I found this book engrossing, especially for the realistic accounts in the silos. I also liked the personal viewpoint of telling family stories amongst the military duties. Many of us like Major Womack led dual lives -the tough and pressured life with the missiles and the gentler side with our children. Top notch!
The Human Side of Air Force Life

It was with great interest that I read this book having been a missle crew member on alert at the same locations. This book is a diary where the author gives you a rare personal look at his experiences as a leader, instructor and caring family man. Titan Tales describes the experiences of being on a SAC missle combat crew much as I remember it...the feeling of accomplishment from successfully working as a team solving simulated launch sequence problems, pulling 24 hour alerts, driving through the hills and small towns of Arkansas or riding in a "Huey" to the missle sites.(BMAT,USAF 1967-1971)
Informative and educational

Mr. Womack takes the reader into his world in this book, sharing not only the exciting and dangerous moments of his career as a crew commander, but also the routine ones. He also puts a human face on part of the Cold War, reminding us that the members of the armed forces have families that they must take care of in addition to their military obligations and responsibilities. Mr. Womack shares enough technical information to make the book informative and educational without making it intimidating or difficult to understand. He also opens his personal life up to the reader, giving them a clear and complete picture of what it was like for him and many other military personnel during that era of the Cold War.
