The old scholar had grown thin with age. The muscles of youth had given way to sinewy joints that still worked, just not as well as they once had. His mind, however, had remained sharp. Pushing his cart full of scrolls toward the open-air deck of the library to avoid the opium smoke that endlessly filled the inner chambers, the old scholar thought about the illegality of what he was doing. These scrolls were a thousand to two and a half thousand years old. Few people knew how to read them. Fewer still ever got to see them. ... Looking out of the small window of his room, watching the massive Library of Alexandria burn, the old scholar decided to smuggle the ancient scrolls with him across the Black Sea and back to his native home and into the protection of his network of friends and fellow scholars near the shores of the Tyr River. ... Imagine that those scrolls were preserved in Europe and added to over the many centuries. Imagine that those scrolls and the stories they contained and the stories that were added were located by a modern scholar and translated into American English. Imagine that the stories in this work are the translations of those stories.
