Somewhat Problematic, But a Decent Set of Stories

This may not be the best storybook, and I also agree that the TV series is better, but this really isn't too bad a book. This book is a set of six stories --- "Fritz Tries Again," "Buried Treasure," "Charles Stands Tall," "Tubbette," "Timothy Takes the Cake," "Laughing on the Inside." These stories are fairly nicely illustrated and generally fun, funny and interesting, although the dialogue seems a bit unnatural at times and some of the stories are a bit odd. There are some great lessons, such as believing in your potential and not giving up. The songs that the teacher Mrs. Jenkins sings are also cute. But, as has been mentioned, some things just don't work, such as the "Tubbette" story, which seems to convey a rather odd message. I don't think the "Charles Stands Tall" story is too bad, though. Charles manages to stand up for himself and doesn't let the teasing negatively effect him.

Fun chapter book to read to the preK set

My 3 year old son loves this book (and so do I)! Each chapter is its own story; read in its entirety, the book is a wonderful tale of kindergarten life.

LEARNING AND LAUGHTER ABOUND

Youngsters will enjoy, identify with and learn from these six apropos and funny stories by award winning author Rosemary Wells. With the same friendly characters found in "Timothy Goes To School" the author tells tales that teach young ones how to share, how to take turns, how to work together, and how to persist in achieving goals. Teachers are depicted as fair mentors who help, encourage and, yes, are firm when it's necessary. In "Fritz Tries Again" it is Science Fair time and Fritz is determined to make a toilet paper roll Superconducting Super Collider. His classmates don't think this is possible and opt for more realistic projects such as collecting seashells or different mosses. Does Fritz surprise them all, including himself? During Bird Week Charles, who is not very big and rather shy, chooses to be a bald eagle. Claude had his heart set on being a bald eagle and tries everything he can think of to trade birds with Charles. First he makes fun of him, and then he offers to give Charles his red truck and yellow airplane. But Charles stands firm although secretly he is afraid he cannot sound very much like a Bald Eagle. Does he overcome his uncertainty? Not all of the fun takes place in classrooms. There are also other adventures for children ages 3 - 8 to follow as they learn about their friends and themselves. - Gail Cooke
