A short story children’s book with nice illustrations (lower elementary level). There's a good moral to this story, but it is well camouflaged under a cloak of human interest, authentic small-town characters and setting, and just the right proportion of sentiment thrown in.
Timothy was an orphan and had been adopted by an elderly woman of kindly heart. Timothy wanted more than anything to give his adoptive-Grandma an extra special present—and to have it a real surprise, but how could he? Timothy comes up with a clever way in which he worked out his problem. He orchestrates a series of transactions—a trade with old Mr. Martin, the carpenter, as well as one with Mrs. Newton who did sewing. He also worked hard to finish his chores early, so that he could transact all the business necessary to make his plan possible. A delightful story that tells how he tried to show his appreciation — and nearly got it wrong in the process!
