Time's Tangent

This gay-themed novella is set between the years 1910 and 1920. Edgar Vestal Dillard is the sole member of the High School English faculty in the small town of Temperance, Oregon. The school library is meager in size and frustratingly underfunded. The solution: a touring company from Portland named Pennshaw's High-Class Exhibitions is engaged to spearhead a fundraising event at the Temperance Opera House. The company, recommended by numerous clergymen and educators, statewide, offers "educational" silent films along with edifying skits and material in-between reel changes. Interacting with a captivating pair of performers, Edgar finds himself edified as to his own character in unexpected ways; ultimately he is inspired to set out on a path to self-acceptance, dignity and personal fulfillment. The novella is light in style but not lightweight in content; overall, it sets out to explore the tensions that exists between the authentic and the false. The novella is peopled by generally likeable and well-meaning individuals, but the inevitable adversarial characters are rendered in humorous terms. The style of the author is descriptive and employs a rich vocabulary. The work's symbols and metaphors are straightforward; they enhance the inherent meanings and values of the work without creating conundrums likely to frustrate the reader. The story is basically a romantic comedy with serious intent.
