95% perfect!

Why 95%? Well, because other than a few things- this book is perfect. Allow me to clarify. The book begins tentatively with the ever-popular notion that Indian people (and dogs!) all came to the America's from Asia over the 'ice-bridge'. This is an Americanized, archaeologist-driven idea that Indian people have rejected as long as it has existed. We were created here, and have always been here. Our oral histories date back many tens of thousands of years before the ice-age. And now the very science of archaeologists is beginning to prove the truth of our oral history! But anyhow, besides this error, and only a couple others ('Shaman' is not a term Indians prefer as it is Asian in origin and definition), this book is plum-stuffed full of highly useful and clearly organized Indian historic fact. Overlook the few boo-boos, and you will learn a TON from this very well researched and truly heartfelt book (which is written by an Abenaki descendant by the way!). If you want truth, dates and facts about American Indian history-to-the-present, then get this book.

Concisely written History of major Native American Events

This book was very hard to put down. There is so much information presented in a clear and consise manner. It covers just about every major event in Native American history. There are many side bar sections that higlight special people, places or events to give the reader more detail. I am somewhat familiar with Native American tribes, but I did not know there were so many different tribes until I read this book. It did not just focus on the major well known tribes. The book also uses a set of symbols thoughout the book so the reader can tell what section of the country the author is talking about. Overall I rate this a very good book and I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in Native American history.
