Stan Davis is a struggling writer who cobbles together a living by substitute teaching and writing hack pieces for a local magazine. There is barely enough for him to buy food and beer (lots of beer), let alone to contribute to the financial well-being of his estranged wife and young son. While languishing in unemployment and a dull affair, Stan discovers a forgotten door in an old brick storefront in town. He inspects it, hoping for inspiration for an article. When the century-old, rusted door handle suddenly unlocks itself, Stan enters a portal that forces him to travel through the past, but not always to places of his choosing. Stan soon realizes that he is being summoned to a dark time in his own life when he began losing his dreams and also when an old friend was murdered at the top of the dam that overlooked the town. In his bizarre journey Stan not only solves the mystery of his friend's death, but also discovers something within himself that offers the possibility of redemption.
