Read this book when I was in middle school 35 years ago and it still has a fantastic impact on the now present day global warming. A tale years ahead of its time. Good, quick reading.
Thirty-five years of memories
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 20 years ago
I read this book many times during the early 70's when I was in grade school. I had forgotten the title and wished to find the book for my own children. Luckily an online reference librarian found the name for me and now I have my very own copy for my children (and me.) This book REALLY captured my imagination 35 years ago and the memories have lingered on. I recommend this book highly.
Excellent Sci-Fi work, especially good for adolescents

I also first read this book in the late 60's. I have lamented giving my copy away years ago. I recall that the book was very exiting, written in a first-person narrative from the point of view of a young man (part of the group forced out). I remember being very intrigued with the descriptions of the society underground (at the time I felt it was a metaphor for conventionalism). The scenes regarding the process of digging up through the ice to the surface were extremely appealing to me at the time--I still recall this part of the book the most clearly. This was one of Silverberg's more "minor" works, mainly because it was more accessible to younger readers, I think, than much of his other work. Still, I would very much like to own a copy of it again! I think a reprinting in paperback targeted for the "Young Adults" section would prove the enduring market value, and the prescience, of this story.
A book written Decades before its time.

This book specifically fictionalized the after effects of a surviving community that escaped global warming conditions in a future time by living underground and beneath the polar icecap that had slid into the Northern Hemisphere and wiped out life as we now know it. The adventure concerns the expulsion of a small group from the community onto the barren ice world above and their quest for survival. This book was written before any questions were raised about global warming.
