Tiger by the Tail

A bloodbath--China crosses the line again. Hundreds of peaceful protesters are killed when the PLA sweeps in to crush a democracy demonstration in Hong Kong. The subsequent declaration of independence by Taiwan leads to the precipice of war. Two young women find themselves at the center of intrigue--Angie Cho, a Hong Kong University law student turned activist and Li Lin, a computer programmer and hacker working with a covert cell within China. Drawn together by fate, their paths unite them in an effort to prevent calamity. Woven through the present-day narrative is the backstory of Angie. The hardships and life lessons she endured growing up mold her political awareness and daring, eventually shaking the foundations of her city, China and the world. Propelled toward a career in law, her trajectory causes her to cross paths with many whose influence fine tune her life's calling, culminating in a run for public office. The opposition she encounters is found to be orchestrated by an increasingly meddlesome central government in Beijing. The hostility comes to a head when the communist regime feels backed into a corner, crossing the border to put down pro-democracy protests within Hong Kong, igniting the reaction by Taiwan. The surprising end offers hope that the increasing nationalism and belligerence we're seeing in China might one day be just a bad dream.
