IN MEXICO DURING THE TIME OF PANCHO VILLA

In 1954 Frank O'Rourke released this book telling a story of Jim Ramsey, a gringo, living below the border in Mexico. Ramsey is working for the Mexican General Herrera to ferry money that Herrera is putting into his own back account in El Paso. Along the way, as the story opens, Herrera has sold Jim Ramsey out, to be killed by a Colonel Montoya of the Rurales. Having a chance to avoid death at the hands of Montoya, Ramsey escapes only to find his way into the camp and service of the 'legendary bandido' patriot of Mexico, Pancho Villa. From this point an action-adventure story both of immense western and revolutionary proportions begins. At novel's ending, 188 pages later in the paperback, Ramsey is safe and sound back across the border with a new Mexican bride, the young and lovely Rosa. The story is action-filled with many unforgettable characters from Pancho Villa to Pedro the Mexican who helped save Ramsey's life and his compadre throughout the story. Then there is Colonel Montoya, a killer if there ever was one, a man who serves himself first and Mexico second. And Sergeant Morales who changes sides to save both Ramsey and Pedro's lives. Similar in excitement and lore to Frank O'Rourke's book A MULE FOR THE MARQUESA (later filmed as the movie THE PROFESSIONALS) the panorama of revolutionary Mexico of the early 20th century is explored and described. A very good read for anyone enjoying not only a western, but a well written story as well. Saddle up amigos, the rurales are hot on our bandit trail. We ride by day, to rest and hide by night. Rosa, disguised as a boy, is carrying $25,000.00 in cash, and Montoya not only wants our lives, but our money as well.
