A girl and her mischievous younger brother are enticed into a world of adventure and danger in this contemporary fantasy story. Lucy and Ricardo are sad and confused when their parents separate and they move with their mother into a creepy old mansion on the edge of town. There are strange powers at work in the old house, and the children find themselves traveling back and forth between their home and a war-torn foreign country where the children of the freedom fighters are being held captive. Together with two children who have escaped from captivity, Lucy and Ricardo help free the others and reunite them with their families. They learn to stop their sibling bickering and work together through their dangerous mission. A tiger, a monkey, and a snake with supernatural powers assist and encourage the children in their heroic efforts.
As a bookstore owner, I read a lot of books for kids and young adults to make sure that they're a) appropriate for my store and b) worth reading. (That's my excuse, anyway). I was quite taken with "Through the Tiger's Eye," a fantasy adventure chronicling the adventures of a twelve year old girl and her six year old brother after they discover a tunnel that connects their corner of Australia to a magical island called Telares. A magic rug, prophetic dreams, a telepathic cat, and children held in economic slavery figure prominently in the plot. Alternately amusing and dramatic, the story makes for a quick, exciting read. The characters are engaging and well drawn, and the story's left wide open for later books. I can't wait to read the next one, assuming I can find it.
