Through the Narrows

Through the Narrows is a memoir by Dede Reed told in two parts. The first describes her childhood in Ohio and summers spent on a lake in the Adirondack mountains, while the second spans her adolescence through early adulthood, starting with a move to Switzerland at age 15 which was followed by boarding school in New England, art school in San Francisco, and pivotal years in Colorado and then Austria. Recording her memories for her grandchildren to whom this book is dedicated, Reed reflects on the foundational and transformational experiences that shaped her life, from her search for a sense of self as a member of a large family to her ever-evolving relationship with her mother; from carefree adventures with cousins at the lake to uncertain romances of her youth; from a growing interest in photography and travel to life changing encounters with people around the world. More than the story of one woman's coming of age, Through the Narrows is also an exploration of the process of writing and the nature of reflection. "Memory is complicated," Reed writes in the Preface. "It is about the past, but it is only in the present--when one muses about those times--that it exists. Moods, internal censorship, longings and times of sheer pleasure affect how the writing takes form."
