In 1822 William Epps Cormack undertook to walk across the interior of the island of Newfoundland, accompanied by Joe Sylvester, a young Mi'kmaq Indian from Conne River. Cormack's stated goal was to find any remaining Beothuk and provide them with the necessary support and protection to enable them to survive. The journey proved to be much more hazardous than anticipated and the elusive Beothuk kept themselves hidden.
