Three Tales of the Possible

These three stories address the frightening possibility that there are forces of which we are unaware that determine the pattern of our lives. In all cases we seem to be at the mercy of our imagination, and somehow become aware of the possible ways in which our lives may have been different from reality. Such a weird scenario is explored in 'Underground Possibilities' when a life in various professions is envisaged in parallel worlds.
In the story 'But for the Grace of Your God', the imagination is deeply pessimistic and follows the daily grind of a person, previously a consultant physician, living on the streets of London, apparently unaware of, or unconcerned by, the depths to which he has fallen.
In 'Reliable Memories', we follow the pain and grief of a middle-aged couple who had lost their daughter to a kidnapper many years before, and their attempts to carry on with their lives.
