Three Stars in the Night Sky: A Holocaust Family's Odyssey of Separation and Reunion

By Fern Schumer Chapman

Book Overview

Imagine being 12 years old in a foreign country, speaking a language you don't understand, with no family in sight. Now imagine it's your only chance to live.

At just 12 years old, Gerda Katz fled Nazi Germany alone, an unaccompanied minor forced to leave behind everything she knew. While her family found safety in the Dominican Republic-one of the only countries accepting Jewish refugees-Gerda faced years of isolation, cultural barriers, and the pain of separation in America.

Through historical photographs, personal documents, and real-life storytelling, Three Stars in the Night Sky offers a powerful Holocaust survivor story for kids, illustrating the resilience of young refugees and the challenges of starting over in an unfamiliar world.
