Carson Taylor has lost his two sons and his ex-wife in an auto accident. Hopeless and depressed, he shuffles through his daily life with thoughts of suicide. A colleague reaches out to help. A lifelong big game hunter, Carson avoids hunting after the accident, but his colleague, Stu Myers, contacts an old friend of Carson's and organizes an elk hunt in a remote location in British Columbia. Carson agrees to go, and the old friend, Aaron Stone, handles the logistics.Aaron has been living alone in Canada for years, making a living guiding hunts and selling firearms. Stu is a client of the company Carson works for. The men are ill-matched to spend two weeks together isolated from others, and small disagreements arise in the first week. Carson tries to work through personal issues related to the tragedy in his life. He opens up to the other men to a small degree. Several days into the trip, he kills a trophy bull elk. He stays in camp two days after the kill, and he discovers Aaron's journal, which contains a complex philosophical diatribe on conservationism and personal ethics. Stu and Aaron hunt together, and Stu makes a poor decision that puts all of the men in grave danger. The insecurities, biases, and emotional limitations of each man are tested and revealed by the resulting conflict.
