Murphy left Iowa with a duffel bag and a lip he kept biting where a cross used to hang. He'd worn it eight years. He left it on a dresser next to a fan that clicked every third rotation. If you'd asked him why, he wouldn't have answered. If you'd asked the priest, the priest wouldn't have either.
Rod left Miami with his brother's bullet casing on a cord around his neck and his grandmother's voice saying the fire can cook or it can burn. He was seventeen and he already knew which one he was.
Danny left Kentucky with a rifle that held five rounds and a sister who couldn't breathe without a machine. He'd been sitting in a chair next to her oxygen monitor for three years. He left the chair. That's the hardest thing he ever did and nobody in his family said a word about it.
Toby left Texas in a dead man's truck with a brass compass in his pocket and a dog waiting at a gate he wasn't coming back to. He had a hundred sixty acres and a full ride to A&M and he turned his back on both of them and if you asked him why he'd tell you to mind your own business.
I left Zagreb with three pins in my shoulder and a folder of stamps taped to my ribs. I was fourteen for my war. I don't talk about it much.
Then we all end up on the same bus. Same bench. Same silence.
