Three Nights with a Djinni: With Every Head Bowed

By: Brauer, Marvin

Three Nights with a Djinni Lance Barstow had spent a lot of time trying to find the perfect gift for his girlfriend's all-important nurses' pinning ceremony. He was sure Cathy would love the fascinating old lamp that had captured his attention in a little curio shop on a back street in Asheville. But boy, was he wrong. Because after the ceremony, when he had presented it to her, her disdain for his prized gift was palpable. To his eternal embarrassment, she had refused to even take it. It looked to Lance like he was on the fast track to break-up number five. How depressing. And as if his catastrophic love life was not enough, there was a good chance he was losing his mind. How else to explain what he was breathlessly watching emanate from the rejected old lamp?

With Every Head Bowed took First Place in the short story contest Faith In Fiction. Set in the rural Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, it is a story of conversion, but it is a messy conversion. (Then again, aren't they all?) It is also a brief peek into church life, and how even good-hearted people filled with the best of intentions often find disruption of the old ways difficult to swallow.
