After scattering the ashes of the only family he had left, Will learns he's inherited the family house, the family bookstore and the family cat. He also learns one other thing: it's time to farewell his childhood and become an adult.
He meets Walter, an ageing widower, as well as a rebel he knows simply as Dainty. Dainty opens the world to Will, and Walter shows him why he needs it opened. Will discovers independence, freedom and new temptations.
But Will also learns of Dainty's dark past that connects him tragically to Walter, and the lengths Dainty will go to in order to correct the universe.
Dainty is what's known as a racer; a thrill-seeker intoxicated by a potentially deadly game. When he wins, he achieves a high great enough to overcome his numbness. If he loses, then balance is restored. And now, despite having lost those he barely knew, Will learns new lessons from others he may never truly get the chance to know either.
