Those Rugged Hills and Green Valleys This history of Harpersfield, NY starts in 1769 with the sale of 250,000 acres completed at the home of Sir William Johnson, and a patent recognizing the political reality of all land within "the Province of New York situate, lying and being in the county of Albany, between the Cookquago branch of Delaware river and the branch of the Susquehanna river called Adiquitange."Subsequently, these hills and valleys were the backdrop for the settlement of the frontier, the American Revolution, and war with Joseph Brant. The 19th century brought town and county reorganizations and the simultaneous development of churches, education, and social and commercial organizations, while the 20th century saw advances in medicine, business, and the railroad that almost came. In the beginning, Harpersfield, NY reached to the Pennsylvania border, but through the years other towns were formed from it. Today Harpersfield is a town of 42 square miles bounded on the west and north by Otsego and Schoharie counties, and to the south and east by Delaware County towns of Davenport, Kortright and Stamford.
