Princess Thorna was always haunted by the absence of her mother in her life. Inspired by a message from a writer friend in one of her mother's books, Thorna escapes from her royal finishing school. On a quest to learn more from the author himself, a stuffy recluse named Sir Archibald Rose,Thorna soon discovers her mother's book is a forgery. Crushed, she reluctantly agrees to have Sir Rose escort her to the nearest village and face the wrath of her father and impending betrothal. But when they arrive in the village, rumors swirl about the mysterious Black Army who ransacked the school in search of the missing princess. Concerned for Thorna's safety, Sir Rose retreats to his home in the woods to wait for the danger to pass until Allina, an acquaintance of Sir Rose from the village, arrives in the dead of night to warn him that the Black Army knows he is hiding the princess. From there, the trio heads west to avoid capture by the Black Army, a group of mercenaries led by Thorna's estranged uncle, Lysander, who sees the princess as his route to the throne. With the Black Army closing in, Thorna, Sir Rose, and Allina realize they must traverse the dangerous and magical Hagarden Woods to evade capture. After a chance encounter in a tavern, the trio hires an exiled fairie named Cort to guide them safely through the woods. Though they can escape the Black Army in the labyrinth of the Hagarden Woods, Thorna and her friends are captured by Queen Blythe, ruler of the faerie folk and well-known enemy to humans. Cort and Sir Rose strike a bargain with the queen for their release by returning the fabled Sword of Alcorn to its rightful home. Thankful for the gesture, the queen imbues Cort with a special ability to command rocks and stones, releases the other with a warning to never return. Meanwhile, back across the kingdom, Lysander is growing desperate to stop Thorna's progress home. He sends an infamous murderer and bounty hunter known as Gren on the princess' trail, instructing him to bring Throna back unharmed and kill anyone who gets in the way. Arriving safely on the other side of the Hagarden Woods, Thorna, Sir Rose, Allina, and Cort celebrate their good fortune at an Inn over hot food and ale. But their revelry is short-lived when Gren and his band of soldiers arrive in the village.
