Thomas Winthrop of Illinois, but originally from Pennsylvania joins the Army with the permission of his parents at the age of sixteen. In the Army Thomas meets several characters, including his best friend, Heidi Fletcher of Kansas. Once Thomas is discharged from the Army he finds a job in La Crosse, Kansas with the help of Heidi's Father. Thomas helps his parents move to Kansas and away from the farm life where a relative is taking advantage of his Father. Something awful happens in La Crosse that leads Thomas back to Pennsylvania. Once in Pennsylvania, Thomas finds a good job and a girl from his past. Will Thomas find true love or will he continue his run of bad luck?
