During a recent trip through Scotland, I passed by a single black sheep standing amid a field filled with hundreds of white sheep. To my own surprise, I found myself uttering, "Hey that's me!" If that seems at all familiar, because you, too, are a bit of a black sheep--meaning, you feel odd with the popular, annoyed by the conventional, and sometimes judged for being too liberal--you'll probably enjoy this book. My purpose in writing it was mainly to get some things down while I'm still able to remember the stories of my life--one stretching across seven decades so far--from being born to a teenage mother to protesting in the streets against the Vietnam War to spending the better part of my days serving addicts, refugees, homeless, prisoners, and everyday folks. However, my inspiration for writing it has been my grandchildren and their children, in hopes they might know my story--a benefit never passed on to me from my grandfathers. Beyond the grands, I've been encouraged to make these pages available to extended family and friends. That way, you no longer need to live with the burning question, "Is there more to Tom than his ruggedly handsome face?" This memoir is an easy read--full of humor, a little drama, and some crazy God stories sprinkled here and there with wisdom picked up along the way. As the famed Baywatch actress, Pamela Anderson, says of her own newly published memoir, "It is a celebration, a scrapbook of imperfect people living imperfect lives and finding the joy in that." May you find joy in this one.
