This novel tells the story of three generations of Lithuanian women: Baba, a traditional herbal healer displaced by war from her country, Maria, who is orphaned a young age during Lithuania's postwar armed resistance and who comes to New York via Poland as a mail-order bride in the 1960s, and Maria's two daughters, Milda, who is lost to the New York drug culture of the eighties, and Cathy, who Maria is forced to give up for adoption. This is a novel about the deep wounds of intergenerational trauma and how they can be healed through love and facing difficult truths.
