In the early 60s Gloria's parents left Jamaica to help rebuild England after World War II. On her 11th birthday Gloria leaves her home in Jamaica, traveling alone to be with her parents in England. She soon realises that this strange land is very different to the home she left. She refuses to accept England as her home. At school she is bullied because of the colour of her skin, but in time and with the help and support of her new friends, she learns to love her new home in England.
