In this book, twelve people with detailed knowledge of baseball set down some of their thoughts on how the game is played and its' history. Each examines the game from a different perspective and the authors and their subjects are: *) Roger Angell - baseball in the mind. *) Earl Weaver - a game of common sense *) Douglass Wallop - the salaried elite *) LeRoy Nieman - the salaried elite, a collection of paintings *) Al Barlick - the man in blue *) Joseph Reichler - the great plays *) Charles Haher - the glove men, fielding *) Frank Slocum - battery, pitching and catching *) Milton Gross - more than just speed, baserunning *) William Leggett - the incomprehensible art, hitting *) Roy Blount Jr. - beware of Moe, hitting *) Dick Young - they call that a hit in Detroit, official scoring Baseball is truly a great game and many aspects of the game are covered in this book. My favorite section was that written by Earl Weaver, where he sets down some of his fundamental strategies of how to win games. Given his record of success, his opinions are something to be taken very seriously. This is a great book about a game that must be thought about to be appreciated. Baseball is a game where subtleties are piled on subtleties and many times it is the differences in the second and third layers that wins the games and pennants. Many of those subtleties are explained here.
