This Girl Will Live: One Woman's Journey from Oppression

A Muslim convert to Christianity, Elizabeth Fahn-Weedor was forced to flee one of Africa's bloodiest civil wars in her home country of Liberia. She clung to her faith in Jesus as her husband and toddler daughter were saved from certain death through a miracle in the killing fields. Faith also gave her the strength to endure years of suffering with her family in a refugee camp. Coming from a culture that did not believe in the education of girls, Elizabeth found support growing up from her grandmother Maima Kai, a midwife who stood fearlessly against a male-dominated society to make education a priority for her granddaughters. After she came to America, Elizabeth served for many years in international ministry alongside her husband. Inspired by the memory of Maima Kai, she then led the effort to create Petals of Hope International, a school for girls in Liberia that provides teaching and resources to young women still shackled by cultural practices that limit them. Elizabeth remains more determined than ever to help a new generation of woman embrace, as she once did, the promise of the gospel that all are found equal at the foot of the cross.
