Bethany Jacobs returns with the thrilling conclusion to The Kindom Trilogy that began with the Philip K. Dick Award-winning These Burning Stars, the debut epic space opera trilogy about revenge, power, and the price of legacy.
Violence has erupted across the Treble. The colony that Jun Ironway and Masar Hawks have fought to protect is now woefully compromised, and its people, unwilling to submit to tyranny once more, face a brutal fight for their lives and freedom. In the midst of upheaval and rebellion, new enemies arise at every corner, including a familiar player who won't let power slip through his fingers again. Not when he has every Kindom Hand under his heel. And whether he will be as bloody-minded as his predecessors remains to be seen. As the quiet ones launch their attack and all hope seems lost, Cleric Chono looks to unlikely allies to fight a final battle for peace. But one crucial question remains: where is Six? Praise for The Kindom Trilogy: ★ "An exciting start from a fresh talent, offering emotional and political complexity plus plenty of interplanetary action." - Kirkus (Starred Review) on These Burning Stars ★ "Plotted like a chess match, confident and surprising as Jacobs moves each piece thoughtfully across her board ... If Jacobs' second entry is anything like the first, we'll have so much more to discover across her universe in the years to come." - BookPage (Starred Review) on These Burning Stars"There's no shortage of twists, betrayals, and unexpected alliances in this intricate story of revenge and survival. This sets things up nicely for a grand finale in book three." -Publishers Weekly on On Vicious Worlds
Dark times for the Kindom! Uprisings everywhere and everyone looking to gain control from the families to Seti Kess and his Brutal Hand of cloaksaan who also wants to bring the Jeveni back from their new home and freedom, even if it means killing a bunch of them. There are no sides that are innocent and purely good, much like real life and it makes this book hit really hard and quite dark with the machinations of greedy men (wanting the sevite trade), genocide, and those who jump sides depending on who the stronger party seems to be. It is very aptly named This Brutal Moon, both for its past and present!
While all that is going on in the present year, this book also jumps back to the time of Drae and her point of view of what happened on the moon with the jevite and her plans to save her people (which folds in nicely with the climax of what happens in the present). And after the cliffhanger of the last book, I was super glad to see that Six made it out, though of course it wouldn't be easy. Chono and Six shine in this book and they really are two halves of the same coin though Effegen also rises to the occasion as Star for her people and of course you also get Jun, Liis, and others fighting for a better future for the Jeveni and the rest of the Treble. It is a messy busy, war and I loved this third book and ending of the trilogy, even with the bittersweetness because it is a high price to keep the universe from falling into chaos!
This was a great last book in a well written trilogy and I am so glad I got the chance to read this and get lost in the Kindom. Chono and Six forever!!!!
