This Book Is Green: Practical Approaches to Sustainable Book Publishing

By Ooligan Press

Book publishers and their partners want to adopt sustainable practices without breaking their budget or falling into the greenwashing trap. But where do they begin when time is already short?

Print books remain in high demand despite the widespread digitization of the world; however, rapid changes in environmental standards, regulations, and other global developments aimed at reducing deforestation mean that the processes by which publishers create print books are constantly evolving. This ever-changing landscape--on top of already tight schedules and budgets--makes it challenging for those publishers to research new book production methods that would improve their sustainability, let alone know which methods have the staying power to meet their demands.

This Book Is Green seeks to bridge that gap by combining knowledge from Book Industry Study Group experts, research by Ooligan Press students, and a variety of case studies to highlight sustainable book design and production practices available for North American presses--the decisions within the publishing supply chain that publishers, designers, and manufacturers can directly influence. It offers case studies and actionable strategies in areas such as:

Selecting greener materials

Pitching sustainability to stakeholders

Deciding on printing models

Minimizing carbon footprints

And other day-to-day business considerations

This timely guide to sustainable book design and production is itself a product of eco-friendly publishing, and serves as a basis for anyone in and beyond the publishing industry to make well-informed, responsible changes to their existing processes.
