I had just graduated with my Master's Degree in English. Informed that there were very few community college teaching jobs in California, and so I looked beyond state lines. I accepted a position as a Language Arts instructor on one of the checkerboard Navajo reservations. Living on a reservation was different from what I had ever thought. Culture Shock 101. I had lived in California for most of my life except for my military service and a one year stint in the state of Oregon. Taking my daughter and two cantankerous cats in a moving van, we started our adventure. The culture of New Mexico is very different from what we were both used to. Fortunately, my daughter and I have (and had) well developed senses of humor. Our experiences, those that I detailed here, allowed us to survive a few years in New Mexico. The Culture Shock allowed us to laugh at ourselves and each other, especially when we were overwhelmed with the resident manana (tomorrow) feature.
