My dear young preacher, come sit with me for a little while. Bring your Bible, bring your questions, and bring that holy fire you feel burning in your bones. I know you are eager to preach. I know you can already see the pulpit, hear the organ, and feel the congregation leaning toward the Word. I thank God for your zeal. The church still needs young men and women who believe that the gospel is the power of God unto salvation and that preaching still matters in a broken world. But I want to tell you something the bright lights will not tell you: preaching is more than a moment on Sunday. It is a life poured out before God. The sermon begins long before you say, 'Turn with me in your Bibles, ' and it continues after the benediction. It lives in your prayer closet, your marriage, your integrity, your study, your suffering, your stewardship, and the way you treat people who can do nothing for you. The pulpit will reveal you, test you, humble you, and-if you let God have His way-sanctify you. I have walked this road long enough to have gathered some scars, some songs, some regrets, and a whole lot of gratitude. I have seen God open doors no person could open, and I have watched Him close doors I was certain I needed. I have preached with strength and preached through tears. I have learned that a preacher can be gifted and still need healing, celebrated and still be lonely, right in the sermon and wrong in the spirit. I wish an old preacher had sat me down early and spoken plainly about these things. So this is not a manual from a man who has mastered ministry. It is an essay from a servant who has been kept by mercy. These thirty lessons rise from Scripture, prayer, pastoral labor, mistakes, victories, and the faithful hand of God. Receive them as counsel from an elder preacher to a beloved protégé. Test every word by Scripture. Keep what is true. And above all, keep your eyes on Jesus-the One who called you, the One you preach, and the One who will carry you home.
