Crossing three continents and spanning three generations, this is the story of a young determined man who left his rural village in Kenya in the quest for Western education. Walking nearly 100 miles to Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya, during the Mau Mau struggle for independence from colonial rule, Mugo was a beneficiary of the famous Kennedy Airlift sponsored by the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation, which took him to the United States in 1960. As the war in Vietnam and the civil rights movement raged on, Mugo overcame racial and cultural barriers and met and married his wife. He continued to pursue his dream of an education. On completing his PhD in 1969, they returned to Kenya to contribute to building the nation and continue to do so today.
