Think Like a Psychiatrist, by Dr. Leslie Lundt, explains how psychiatrists think when they diagnose and prescribe. Dr. Lundt's book is also a guide to the dozens of psychotropic medications used to treat mental illnesses, and she tells consumers and caregivers how to seek and find the best treatment. Because my son has been a patient of Dr. Lundt for the last ten years, I know that the author of "Think Like a Psychiatrist" is a brilliant and compassionate doctor. In her book, Dr. Lundt gives to readers the same information she shares with consumers and their families. She begins with four chapters that explain what psychiatrists are thinking when they diagnose their patients' illnesses and prescribe medications to treat them, and she tells readers how to improve communications among primary care doctors, psychiatrists, and their patients. In the next two chapters, we learn why psychotropic medications are used and how they work to control mental illnesses. Separate chapters on antidepressants, anti-anxiety agents, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, stimulants, and sleep aids include information about how specific medications work to control specific illnesses; and in these chapters, Dr. Lundt gives the drug names and the brand names used by pharmaceutical companies. She also discusses the benefits of each medication, as well as the possible side-effects that are of most concern. The last four chapters of Think Like a Psychiatrist explain why "Meds are only part of the solution." Dr. Lundt encourages patients and caregivers to become well informed and active in the treatment process. One of the closing chapters, "Encouraging Words for Our Patients," includes almost two dozen excellent tips and suggestions. The final chapter lists books, articles, and a newsletter where readers can find additional information about medications used in psychiatry. Because Think Like a Psychiatrist is clear, easy to read and understand, and packed with lifesaving information and suggestions, my family and I have already given a copy to a consumer in need of help. Even people who have read a great deal about mental illness will probably find that Dr. Lundt's information is so up to date that they will learn something useful from her book. I certainly did. A remarkable lesson in how to think about mental disorders..

Mental disorders fall into complex subcategories and psychiatrists are well known for making a complicated subject even more complicated. However, put all those preconceived notions aside when you read "Think Like A Psychiatrist" . Dr. Lundt has brilliantly put together a clear and logical progression of the causes and treatments of conditions like depression, mania, obsessions and problems thinking clearly. With simple explantations and wonderful examples of how patients deal with their mental problems, Leslie Lundt really does teach a non-medical person how to think like a psychiatrist from a new perspective. She has accomplished this using clever illustrations and explanations that teach both patients and their friends or family , how to talk to their doctors about antidepressant medications, mental problems and concerns without feeling burdened by lack or understanding or complex language. I recommend this book to both physicians and any one who has ever wondered how our marvelous brains put us to sleep, wake us up and regulate our emotions, behaviors and fears.
