Think Like A Fish: Seeing Your Church through the Eyes of the Unchurched

If we are called to be fishers of people, shouldn't we truly know the people we are trying to catch-or guide into a relationship with Christ? Shouldn't we know the best time of day to get their attention? Shouldn't we know the right bait to use to even attract them and persuade them to take a closer look at the Christ we offer? What temperature suits the fish in your area best?I think it's important for leaders of churches to begin to see their churches as outsiders see them, much like fish in a sea. We are trying to attract those fish and draw them into our churches, but we need to begin to see what the fish see, not what we see or want them to see. It can be challenging for people inside of the church to understand how the church's atmosphere is perceived by outsiders. Members have chosen this church for particular reasons and probably love it-or at least love some aspects of the church. But in order to attract those on the outside, both pastors and lay leaders will need to think like fish-see church like the onlookers see it. We will need to speak the same language as the fish we're trying to catch and serve the food they eat as we guide them to our places of worship. As easy as it may sound initially, seeing the church as fish do is difficult for many believers. Many of us were raised in the church and thus have no idea what life looks like in its absence. We've never been new to a church. Ask yourself a question: when was the first time you went to church? Interesting enough, you probably don't have a date because most church members were born and raised in a church environment. This book will not only encourage and also equip you to think more like a fish when viewing your congregation, but will give you the tools needed to nurture a loving and welcomed environment that shares the love and grace of Christ with others and draws them closer to God-even if it draws them closer to another church. The vision is to make sure our churches reflect Christ's nature in all that we do and say. Let's go fishing!
