2020AD. Where to start? It was a year I am sure we would all rather forget. But as life changed - maybe forever - there were so many things which defined the year which were linked to, but not necessarily inextricably dependent upon, the COVID-19 pandemic. Black Lives Matter. The utter absurdity of the Trump administration. The nightly Downing Street updates and the Spitting Image-lite of the Conservative government, impossible to lampoon said The Guardian's satire writers (respectfully, I beg to differ), the Proud Boys and the best armed but worst organized revolution in history, Netflix box set gorging and (ahem) 'working from home', Jackie Weaver and parish council Zoom meetings, masked populations. All these things will be gone forever, like tears in the rain. Unless.... This little collection feels like a snapshot of this time. The stories themselves had taken shape some years ago, in particular the titles, and it was always my intent to come full circle back to my first professional gig of zombie stories, almost 30 years ago now. But once the nightly news briefings began and the endless Sky screen saver ads and grim music of advice and guidance and, well, sometimes what felt like propaganda, began in earnest and the lockdowns loomed, it did feel like an opportunity to dust off these stories and see what I could do with them. The results are here, and you can judge for yourself.
