“All Quiet on the Western Front” for the rest of us.

The presentation starts with different people who experienced WWI and what it was like to be inducted. Even though every war is different, you can recognize the similarities of military life. Peter Jackson shows what people thought as the war starts and into the thick of it. The filming is excellent, with shots that you would not expect, from trench life to dispatched horses. We get lice, rats, and other critters. There are a lot of colors, but also black and white. The sound quality is good, and the subtitles look professional. It can be either monotonous or mesmerizing depending on your view. Now it is time to read “All Quiet on the Western Front” by Erich Maria Remarque . Every war is different; however, I got a sample (not as intense) in Vietnam with mud, tunnels, and firefights, but nothing like the constant and intense environment displayed here. It is the voices of the men involved that make this presentation personal.
