The first Scottish war of independence ended in 1314 with the victory at Bannockburn. William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, the two great Scottish heroes, led the fight against English dominance. Despite many stories and movies, many questions remain unanswered.
Rather than watch a spider persevere while exiled on Rathlin island, Bruce spent the months he was missing building a new army and developing a new style of warfare, using the terrain to fight for him.
The hero of this novel is developed from a single sentence in the histories. Angus is the natural son of Niall, Earl of Carrick, recognised as his heir under old Celtic laws. It is, however, his half-sister Marjorie, mother of the Bruce, who inherits the title. Angus pioneers the guerilla warfare developed by his half-nephew, King Robert.
