A decade after colossal monsters known as Megapredators -- or Preds -- began ravaging American cities, humanity's last line of defense is the Knight Program: a fleet of towering mechs engineered to battle the beasts. When three Preds rise from Lake St. Clair and level the city, the Abrahams race to the Knight factory where they work. Trapped inside and out of options, they climb into a nearly finished mech and, against every odd, defeat the attackers. In the chaos, they intercept a fragmented warning from Tep -- now training at a Knight facility in Colorado -- that something is deeply wrong. With Yas uncovering disturbing properties in the Preds' black blood, the family abandons the ruins of Detroit and drives west to find their son.

Their cross-country journey reveals a nation broken by Pred attacks -- and confirms Yas's growing suspicion that the creatures are not acting randomly. Outside Chicago, the Abrahams clash with another Pred, then find themselves targeted by a government Knight unit accusing them of theft. They refuse to surrender. Using their intimate knowledge of Knight engineering, they destroy the government mech and take its surviving pilot, Captain Maddie Dell, into custody. As Zee slowly bonds with Dell, she learns their orders were to stop the Abrahams from ever reaching Colorado -- hinting at secrets far darker than anyone suspected.

At the Colorado facility, Sami and Yas uncover a truth that reshapes everything: the Preds are not monsters or aliens. They are human beings -- specifically Black men -- lured into the Knight Program and forcibly transformed through exposure to the Preds' mutagenic black blood. The operation, orchestrated by Simon Pillar, the billionaire architect of the Knight Program, and his government allies, is a genocidal scheme to reshape America's population under white nationalist control. The Pred attacks aren't random chaos -- they are cover.

They arrive too late to stop Tep from being subjected to the procedure. Though they free him, his mind is gone -- and he unleashes the facility's Preds in a catastrophic rampage. As Denver and Boulder fall under siege, the Abrahams fight desperately to reach what's left of Tep's humanity. They succeed. Tep turns on Pillar's forces -- but the battle costs him his arm, and Zee, infected by Pred blood, discovers she has gained something inhuman in exchange.

In the aftermath, the family rebuilds -- and resolves to follow Pillar to his second facility in Arizona, where the key to reversing Tep's transformation may still exist. But deep in the ruins of the Colorado base, something stirs. The Pred blood ignites. A portal tears open. And something monstrous begins to come through.
