A few years after retirement in 2004, I returned to Rothesay, becoming more aware that myself, family and former pals had now become history. When, very rarely, people talked about World War 2 in Rothesay, most of them were either under the impression that, as youngsters, we were deprived of food, clothing and fun, or, they were reveling in the fact that Rothesay was once a great Royal Navy base, which it was. Of course, there were frequent mentions of the midget submarines and the depot ship CYCLOPS, which was the submarine mother ship moored to a buoy in the bay. Growing up in that era, us youngsters never really noticed mundane aspects as quoted above. We were too busy having fun and, SO, this is the story of a boy and his various pals who were born, lived and survived just before, during and after the war years.
