Terrible writing. Mediocre illustrations

I bought this book for my toddler because I saw a lot of people recommending it. I could not be more disappointed. The writing is horrendous. It’s simile after simile (some of them don’t even make sense: “the sun rose and stretched like a yawn down the alley”). The author clearly thought she was being clever with her writing, but it comes off like a high school student writing an English paper. The illustrations are alright, but nothing special. Overall a very disappointing book.
