Theory construction is an art where creativity and imagination play a major role. This booklet focuses on techniques with an inductive approach, thus the name "ground up", where we build theory from many different types of data. The purpose of this booklet is to expose you to different techniques and methodologies that can be modified to generate theory. These include metaphors, narratives, observational research and the Delphi method as theorizing tools. Metaphors are intended to help in developing a complex theory from the use of more familiar events. With narratives and observational research we come in close contact with the population of interest to develop and refine theories. The Delphi method takes advantage of the expertise of other scholars and practitioners to help develop explanations.
