Book Overview

THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING PHENONEMON

A Katie Couric Book Club Pick - A Jen Hatmaker Book Club Pick

" A] word-of-mouth smash hit." --The New York Times

"A treasure." --Hoda Kotb

One spring morning, a stranger named Theo arrives in the small Southern city of Golden. He doesn't explain much about where he came from or why he's there--but when he visits the local coffeehouse, where pencil portraits of the people of Golden hang on the walls, he begins purchasing them, one at a time, and giving each portrait to the person depicted. In exchange, he asks only for the person's story. And so portrait by portrait, person by person, secrets are revealed, regrets are shared, and ordinary lives are profoundly altered.

A story of giving and receiving, of seeing and being seen, Theo of Golden is an unforgettable novel about the power of generosity, the importance of connection, and the quiet miracles that happen when we choose kindness and wonder.

A Good Book

I loved this story. A good book about good people that made me feel good. A rarity in these times. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me smile and it made me think. I will always recommend Theo. to anyone who has lost their affinity for others. Theo is restorative. Enjoy.

Theo of Golden is a must read!

This is an amazing book. I didn't want to put it down. The author's descriptions of the scenery and characters brought everything to life. It made me reflect on my own life and wanting to improve interactions with other people. I will be reading it a second time!

Kindness in old age

For me, the book was about kindness and what you have time for in old age. Others might say the book was about love, but I would debate whether that was Theo’s primary characteristic and/ or motivation. I appreciated the focus on the small beautiful things which the old have the time to not just see, but to revere. I liked how the geography of Theo’s youth figured throughout his life as does the geography of my youth. I bought the book for my grandchild born in the year of its publication to help her know what the year of her birth was like. I hope that she will note that a first time author made it to the bestseller list with a novel about kindness and related opportunities in old age.

A true treasure

,I just finished this incredible book. It was our selection for our book club. I read a fair amount and since I am 77 yrs. old, that means MANY books! I want you to know "Theo of Golden" is one of my top five all-time favorites!. The story line and your writing style were extraordinary. I felt like I was in Golden and knew all of Theo's friends. The ending was so perfect! My book club meets tomorrow to discuss the book. I'm sure they will share my opinions.
