Kazamias shows us the resilience of the human spirit. He shows us that through compassion a woman can extricate herself from a haunting past to find love, long after she has appeared to have surrendered to a life of solitude. I could not put the book down. Marianna stays with you as you follow her coming to her own reality. Through love and compassion she finds her salvation.
Flowing read
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 17 years ago
This novel by a new author is a "flowing read"--going back and forth between different time periods in the main character's (Mariana's) life, it nevertheless blends one scene, one atmosphere, one vignette, into another with easy transition. The personae are believable (often vivid); and the plot (essentially one of character--almost a Bildungsroman) engrosses the reader. One slight quibble would be the need for a better copy-editor: sometimes a word or phrase or sentence structure is not quite idiomatic; and often the footnotes, meant to help the reader understand a foreign word here and there, seem unnecessary or arbitrarily chosen. This is only a minor flaw in an essentially wonderful tale told with enthusiasm and finesse. Leon Rosenstein, Professor of Philosophy
Masterful Storyteller

With his first novel "Then It Was Dawn", Thomas Kazamias has established himself as a masterful storyteller. In an original writing style we are taken on an exquiste journey, where the journey itself becomes as enjoyable as its end. This journey takes the form of the emotional construct of a woman, revealed to us layer by layer. It is a difficult life, which is defined mostly by her relationships to others. The journey completes itself when she breaks through this existence to define herself by her own spirit. This is a highly recommended novel and a must for those who enjoy being caught up in the imagery of a talented writer.

Superb literature

A beautifully and sensitively crafted tapestry about a retired prostitute, Mariana Simone, who learns that prostitution is certainly not the worst fate a person can have. We are taken on a haunting, rich and deeply introspective journey though this woman's life, memories and emotions. We meet Mariana apprehensive and vulnerable, but as the story unfolds her strength and character shine. We see her as a child, adult and finally a middle aged woman who reflects and often agonizes over her life. We experience her hopes, horrors, passions, regrets and triumphs. Each chapter teases us a bit and hints deliciously at more to come, as her life is ever further revealed. Readers who like to take the time to savor carefully and elegantly written passages will find this book a rare joy. Not just a good book, but good literature that transcends the vicissitudes of literary fashion.
