The Young Rescuers

By: Gawell, Donna B.

When three American cousins light a mysterious gromnica candle, they are transported back to World War II Poland right into the heart of their ancestors' struggle for survival. As the Nazis prepare to evacuate their village, the cousins uncover a dangerous secret: their grandparents are hiding a Jewish baby. Invisible to everyone but their blood relatives, the children become ideal rescuers. But their mission soon grows beyond one infant when they discover that thousands of Jewish babies desperately need to be saved. With the Germans enforcing brutal punishments for anyone aiding Jews, the cousins face an agonizing choice: will they risk their family's and the villagers' lives to save strangers? Inspired by true events and the extraordinary courage of Polish Home Army partisans, this gripping novel is a tribute to their courage and sacrifice, and the enduring power of hope.
