I thought I knew stuff..

I am a child of the '50's and my father fought in WWII. His time in that war marked his life, and I spent my childhood watching "Victory at Sea" on TV and listening to stories he would tell. Since my adulthood I have developed an interest in Nazi Germany-what happened-etc. I have read Speer's book, "Inside the Third Reich", also "Rise and Fall of the Third Reich", "Is Paris Burning", "Life and Death of Adolph Hitler" and more. Yet when I read this book "The World War II Reader" I learned why the Germans felt okay with the invasions, at first. I learned what they were wrongly blaming the Jews for-the loss of WWI and the resulting loss of land. I learned why the our nation was so afraid of Orientals living in America-it was, at least in part, because of that incident on that little Hawaiian island with the downed Japanese "Pearl Harbor" pilot. I learned that people were hurt from mustard gas in Italy. I am a little more than half of my way through the book and feel confident of learning much more. I wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone who wants to fill out their picture of that time in history.

Very Good Articles Make a Very Good Book

As one of the contributors to this book, I was wary of this complilation that combined some very select WORLD WAR II magazine articles into a single bound chronological volume. The result, however, is a detailed acount of some of the important events of the Second World War. As is often the case, individual magazine articles are very focused on specific subjects. Stand-alone essays are independent of the need to insert unnecessary verbiage and superfluous transition paragraphs to introduce other chapters. The WORLD WAR II READER is no exception. In book form this work is like a fine cable television special without commercial interruption. This volume contains 24 well researched and well written articles about World War Two in the European and Pacific theaters of war. As a beginner or long time military history enthusiast, this book is certainly something that should find its way into your personal library.
