First, this volume should not be confused with a field guide or identification guide even though it looks like one when you first pick it up. This is a translation from Italian and written by Gianfronco Bologna. The World of Birds is an over view of birds found around the world. This work was first published in the mid 1970s (as far as I can tell) and the translation comes across quite well. The work is quit strong on the anatomy and psychology of birds in general, covering muscle structure, flight dynamics, the evolutionary process of birds, different habitats in different parts of the world, classifications and live cycles and habits, diet, breeding habits and so on. The photographs, diagrams, drawings and sketches are quite good and the text is clear and precise. The book is compact and in the standard size for normal field guides and is bound in a hard cover. (Finding a copy that is not hinging or spine that is not cracking is an adventure within itself). I did not find this book as useful as many, partly due to dated information. I did not give this particular book five stars simply because, while it is good in its own right, there are many, many other volumes out there that present the same information, but go into far greater detail and are much more available. Many of these books are more specific when addressing the subject matter. I did give the book four stars because as a collector's item, it is quite good. I collect bird books and this one filled in space in my collection quite nicely...hey, a person can never have too many bird books. All in all, if you are into collecting books in this genre, then this is a good one to pop on the shelf. It is an interesting book and a nice addition to any collection. It is now out of print and getting more and more difficult to find, in particular a copy that is in good condition.
