Kai Diata Giovanni is a powerful young author and performer who began to write poems and perform spoken-word pieces starting at eight years old. Kai writes to express a young person's perspective on issues such as justice, identity, power, suffering, and love. Writing also allows Kai to explore the impact the external world has on her inner world, as she has navigated through childhood to becoming a teenager in a world where that journey is increasingly complex.Already, a wide range of experiences has shaped Kai's vision and voice. She has participated in a die-in to protest NYPD policies, the Women's March in support of women's rights, and many other social justice-focused actions. Kai is also a member of a grassroots movement that educates youth on political, environmental, and, specifically, racial justice, called New Afrikan Scouts. She has performed with musicians, dancers, and emcees as part of a new black arts movement.Locally, Kai has done many readings for friends and her extended Bed-Stuy family at locations throughout the neighborhood and has performed at The Blue Note jazz club in New York's Greenwich Village. Far, far less locally, Kai has even performed poetry in South Africa, with the global arts initiative Bridges: A Pan Afrikan Arts Movement.Kai writes and performs in order to convey a unique view of the world, to create and share powerful experiences that will hopefully, affect you as well.
