The Woodcarver's Secret
A sweeping historical novel set in turn-of-the-century New York, where a young immigrant wife defies convention to carve carousel horses in a trade closed to women. Coming-of-age historical fiction of artistic ambition, hard-won freedom and a love worth crossing a country for.
By Day, a Dutiful Wife. By Night, a Woodcarver in Secret.
At the turn of the twentieth century, on the crowded streets of Manhattan's Lower East Side, Hannah dreams of becoming a woodcarver.
But the Brooklyn workshops where magical carousel horses are created belong to men. Women aren't allowed to carve there, no matter how talented they might be. Determined to prove herself, Hannah secretly works at night in a hidden workshop, carving the beauty she longs to create.
Trapped in an unhappy marriage and bound by the expectations of family and tradition, she dreams of a life where she can finally live and create openly.
Then she meets a man who offers her a reckless chance at freedom.
When he must flee, Hannah makes the boldest decision of her lifetime. She sets out alone to find him, traveling from New York to Chicago to Hollywood in search of the man who believed in her talent and the future she refuses to abandon.
The Woodcarver's Secret is a standalone historical novel, for readers who love women breaking barriers, artistic passion and turn-of-the-century America. Perfect for fans of Kate Quinn, Jennifer Donnelly and Pam Jenoff.
