my students agreed it was mean to call the donkey wonky

While this story is cute and fun, as soon as I read that the donkey was called wonky because he lost a leg, I thought, "Well, that's not very kind!" However, the reviews were great and several friends stated that they loved the book. I thought maybe I was judging too harshly. So I read it to the class. As soon as I read the part, "They called him Wonky Donkey" one of the children said, "That's not nice," and I had to agree. It was written quite a while ago and perhaps we weren't as sensitive to these issues back then, however, I don't believe it should be read to young children unless you are going to have a conversation about name calling.

Cute & Funny

This is a very cute, hilarious story that children and adults of all ages will love. My 6 year old granddaughter who has autism and really wasn't into reading books can't get enough of this book and even loves to participate in the reading! She happily reads this story over and over again.
