In 1999, THE WONG BABY takes place in China. Their official policy mandates One Family, One Child, which creates a social dilemma. When Chin-leh gives birth to Zhu-bo her family forces her to go to an orphanage and give up her newborn daughter, but she is turned away because there is no room due to too many babies. In America, Tom Farnsworth is a mall developer in Southern California and in business with his two older brothers. Tom's daughter sees the story about the unwanted baby girls in China, and discusses with her father the deplorable conditions female babies must endure. Tom and his wife go to China, but the baby they adopt suddenly dies. Meanwhile, Fu-Manchu Wong has stolen Zhu-bo and is offering her on the black market. Tom returns to China, but he cannot adopt another baby. In Shanghai, Tom protests and is sentenced to ten years in a Chinese education camp. His brothers enlist Fu-Manchu to help get their younger brother released. Back in California, Tom steps off the plane carrying Zhu-bo in his arms.
